Arietta

October 25, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

Arietta

Arietta was founded by long time Napa Valley winemaker John Kongsgaard, his wife Maggy (died in 2020) and Fritz & Caren Hatton. Today Fritz and his wife are the sole proprietors as they bought out the Kongsgaard's ownership in 2005. Fritz told us that he has enjoyed wine since the early 1970s when he was at college. He "grew up" drinking French wine. While … [Read more...]

Malk Family Vineyards

Malk Family Vineyards was founded by Brian and Nancy Malk in 1998 when they purchased eleven hillside acres in the heart of the Stags Leap District. They began planting their vineyards a year later with premium Cabernet Sauvignon clones - from both Spottswoode and Diamond Creek (two premium Napa Valley producers). Their first vintage dates from 2003 and the … [Read more...]

Gibbs Napa Valley

Gibbs Napa Valley is owned and operated by winemaker and label designer Craig Handly and his son Spencer. Craig's first brand was Terroir Napa Valley (which are the wines we originally reviewed when we met with him) - in conjunction with the Terroir Napa Valley wines, he also made wine under the Sentall label. Craig was a commercial fisherman in Kodiak … [Read more...]

Maldonado Vineyards

October 25, 2013 by Dave 6 Comments

Maldonado Vineyards

Maldonado Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery located in the far northern reaches of Napa Valley. We spend much of our time in the southern part of Napa Valley as based on numbers, this is where most of the producers are located. However, there are really very few physical wineries in and around Calistoga. As a result, it is a treat when we … [Read more...]

Cavus Vineyards

October 25, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

Cavus Vineyards

Cavus Vineyards is a slightly less than 2 acre vineyard on the east side of the Stags Leap District almost directly above the well-known Fay vineyard (one of the most historic vineyards in the Stag's Leap District). This is certainly a decent vineyard neighborhood, and the views aren't half bad either. Cavus is owned by Darryl and Laurel Browman. Darryl … [Read more...]

Saunter Wines

October 25, 2013 by Dave 2 Comments

Saunter Wines

Saunter Wines is owned by Josh and Heather Clark and focuses on extremely limited, single varietal, single vineyard wines. Josh grew up in Napa Valley, graduated from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (California's Central Coast) and after college worked for an area family-owned vineyard, helping manage six hundred acres. Wanting to return to his Napa roots and … [Read more...]

The Vineyardist

October 25, 2013 by Dave 4 Comments

The Vineyardist

The Vineyardist is one of those rare historical properties within Napa Valley that often fly under the radar. The original vineyards on site were planted in the early 1880s; the story begins with a Danish shipping captain by the name of Lorenz (Lorenzo, Lawrence) Petersen (1843-1915). He left his country in the mid 1860s to avoid joining the German army. He … [Read more...]

Prime Cellars

October 25, 2013 by Dave Leave a Comment

Prime Cellars

Prime Cellars (not to be confused with Prime Solum, another Napa Valley based producer) focuses on very small production wines from the Napa Valley - with an emphasis on the Coombsville appellation (east of the city of Napa) and on small family owned vineyards. Many vineyards in Coombsville are 'back or front yard' vineyards - usually very small in size - … [Read more...]

Handwritten Wines

Handwritten Wines

Handwritten Wines was founded by three couples (all with medical backgrounds) two of whom live in South Dakata and one locally in Napa Valley. The couples also own Jessup Cellars which is located just north of the Handwritten tasting room in Yountville. See our review of Jessup Cellars for more information about these couples and their South Dakota … [Read more...]

Trinitas Cellars

October 25, 2013 by Dave 2 Comments

Trinitas Cellars

Trinitas Cellars was founded by Tim (born and raised in Michigan) & Steph Busch in 2002. In 1948 after returning from World War II, Tim's father Joseph co-founded a single grocery store called Country Market in Clinton, Michigan. Much later in 1975, Joseph co-founded and repurchased two of his original six supermarkets, calling them J&C Family Foods. Today … [Read more...]
