Pott Wine (Aaron, Claire & daughters) was started by long time Napa winemaker Aaron Pott. He and his wife Claire own several sizable and rugged pieces of land on Mt. Veeder. Their first property (76 acres) was purchased in 2004, a former prune orchard at about 1600 feet. They started with only 1/3 of an acre of vines and later planted out a total of additional acres to four varieties. The site is divided into 8 tiny micro-blocks and despite their proximity to each other, the differences in soils and microclimates all contribute to the characteristics in his wines. The soils up here are former marine soils which have ultimately been uplifted. Fossils are sometimes found on the property. But interestingly, a very short distance away as the crow flies is the summit of Mt. Veeder, roughly to the west; those soils are volcanic composed of either a white tufa like ash material or iron rich red rocky earth. There are none of these soils on the Pott property.
In the 1960s this property was known as the Samuel Elster Ranch, named for the Elster family living there. In the 1970s the property was owned by Jack and Else Salter. More recent owners of this property, Budge and Arlene Brown acquired the site in 1999 and were also in the wine business. Arlene passed due to breast cancer in 2005. The Browns had purchased another property in Pope Valley before Arlene’s cancer diagnose with the intent to build a retreat center for women. Budge’s Pope Valley property and vineyards were home to his winery Cleavage Creek for several years until he tragically died in a single-engine plane crash in the Sierra Nevada mountains in 2011. The focus of Cleavage Creek was to sell wines and use some of the proceeds to support breast cancer survivors and research.
Leading up to the 1940 built house on the Pott property, one passes the tiny and often overgrown Redwood Cemetery, established with the first cemetery association meeting occurring on May 17, 1887 containing approximately 160 graves of Mt. Veeder families including some of the earlier pioneers on the mountain.
Ever the Europhile, Aaron likes to tell people that his vineyard layout is roughly in the shape of the European continent – minus the outline of Italy. In 2017 Aaron and Claire purchased another 130+ acres of land with the intent to potentially develop an additional very small section to vines. The vineyard is farmed organically; Aaron applies biodynamic practices that he learned while working in Saint-Émilion.
The focus of Pott Wines is on individually crafted wines, with respect to the vineyard site. All of their wines are produced in extremely limited quantities, and each is distinctive. No cookie cutter wines here. The initial bottling from the Pott Vineyard was merely half a barrel (until the rest of his vineyard matured). Today his Mt. Veeder vineyard is planted to two five acres (8 distinctive blocks) of vines including two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon (Weimer and See), Merlot, Cabernet Franc and about 1/2 acre of Viognier. For his own wines, Aaron makes wines he enjoys drinking, whereas as a consulting winemaker one is not always making wines for one’s own palate. Pott wines produces wines from their Mt. Veeder property, single vineyard bottlings and a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Aaron has built a remarkable pedigree of working with premium vineyards in Napa and in Europe. Because of his lengthy career in the Napa Valley and winemaking skills – he has access to some of the valley’s most premium vineyards, some of which he even helped to plant. And his vineyard expertise is impressive – combining his knowledge with state-of-the-art technology and a grounded holistic perspective that in part comes with working with some of the best and brightest in the industry across a variety of wine regions.
Aaron’s father was a Presbyterian minister who enjoyed German Riesling. Perhaps his father’s proclivity for wine influenced Aaron’s own career as he was drawn to wine making at a young age. Aaron grew up in Eugene, Oregon but moved around with his family based on his fathers’ career. After graduating from high school, the family was conveniently living in the town of Davis, California home of arguably the best wine school in the country, the University of California, Davis.
While at Davis he took his first job in Napa Valley, working in the lab at Robert Mondavi Winery. Through both his time at Mondavi and at UC Davis he met husband wife winemaker and professor Steve Lagier and Carole Meredith – a friendship that would eventually turn into a partnership where both parties operated Chester’s Anvil for some years before eventually stopping production of those limited wines. And interestingly, Steve and Carole also live on Mt. Veeder.
Aaron earned his undergraduate degree in Enology from UC Davis having been one of the few Napa based winemakers who actually lived in Davis before attending college there. During his time living in France, he made wine for several chateaus and met a number of accomplished winemakers including Philippe Melka. One day Aaron had stopped next to Chateau Petrus and was not far from the winery in their vineyards sampling some grapes. Melka was working for Petrus at the time and came over to see why this guy was in the Petrus Vineyards.
Aaron’s first official winemaking job in the valley was under Napa legend John Kongsgaard at Newton Vineyard as assistant winemaker in 1990. Later Aaron moved to France where he earned his master’s degree in Viticulture from the Université of Bourgogne. Upon returning to California, he landed a dream job at Beringer as their “international winemaker” flying to countries such as Chile, Italy and France to make wine. He has been the primary winemaker at St. Clement and at Quintessa and now much of his time is in demand as a consulting winemaker for a select group of premium Napa based producers.
Our first tasting with Aaron was at his self-titled estate, Châteauneuf-du-Pott high in the woods of Mt. Veeder on a gloomy early spring day in 2010. One walks into Aaron’s house and quickly spies the stack of thick Oxford Dictionaries. No, he is not a dictionary salesman in his spare time but rather is a “scholar” of the dictionary and maintains a keen interest in the English language. The names of Pott wines are historically relevant and include some rather in-depth stories. And one also sees various vintages of bottle after bottle of Château Latour lined up along one of his windowsills. These were not accumulated from years of collecting and drinking but were all consumed in one night – the price of admission for a party he had here with friends years ago.
Select Wines
As of our latest update to this review, Pott Wines focus on several categories of wines: the estate Chateauneuf-Du-Pott Vineyard on Mt. Veeder vineyard, single vineyard wines from around Napa Valley, Napa Valley designate blended wines, and wines from Lagier Meredith Vineyard. Regardless of the wine, these are all small production bottlings (typically under 200 cases of each wine). And there are no boring wine names here… ever. Aaron is far too creative for that. These are names that invite questions and prompt discussion, which arguably is what wine is supposed to do anyway.
Agnès Sorel
One of the more unique consistent bottlings from Napa Valley is the Agnès Sorel, always a 100% varietal Cabernet Franc from Mt. Veeder. This wine is named in homage to the mistress of King Charles VII of France in the 1400s.
One of Aaron’s friends asked if he and his assistant winemaker, Eric Hagyard would to come to France and help translate (Aaron speaks French). His offer was supported by fully paid flights for both Aaron and Eric. This one trip turned into subsequent visits to various wine regions in France for the next five years. They would often taste natural wines; Aaron was not impressed with the quality, so he decided to start making his own. The first commercial vintage was in 2019, but previously, Aaron would make a small lot no sulphur wine but when it came time to bottle, he would always add sulphur and blend the lot into another bottling. Agnès Sorel is always aged for about 10 months in amphorae, a vessel that is more oxidative than a wooden barrel.
The 2022 POTT Cabernet Franc Agnes Sorel (100% varietal); this wine is opaque, deep ruby with an amaranthine rim. The bouquet smells a bit reductive, like chalk, match stick and iodine, with the most dominant fruit showing cherry, accompanied by dark raspberry, boysenberry and as the wine continues to breath, it opens to dark chocolate and Graham cracker. Its flavors include dark cherry, blackberry, plum, and dark mulberry and chocolate. Lingers bright with a balanced acidity and both fruit and texture paralleling each other for some time. Rounded, plush, soft and gentle, the tannins sport a pillowy and powdery long lasting chalky texture. We noted that less of the reductive characteristic show on the palate as compared to the bouquet.
The 2021 Pott Wines Agnès Sorel (100% varietal) is deep ruby; the bouquet opens with notes of sweaty leather, a floral character including violets, sage, dried herbs and petrichor. Minerally. Give this wine time to evolve and the fruit will become more expressive. In addition to the diversity of other aromas, it offers plum, red cherry and bramble; this later aromatic reminded us foraging for wild blackberries in the heat of the day during late summer. Driven by both acidity and flavor the palate reveals dark raspberry, red plum, assorted berry fruits and tobacco. Savory. The energetic and tart finish is red fruited with flavors of currant, red cherry and cranberry. Springy and tightly woven tannins sport a drying, gravelly and firm grip. Long lasting. One can both taste and feel the intensity of the vintage on this particular wine; like Aaron’s other wines, this bottling is certainly built to age.
Incubo
In terms of this wine, Incubo refers to mythical creature guarding treasure. It also means nightmare in Italian. Fortunately the character of this wine regardless of vintage, has nothing to do with a bad nightmare, only nomenclatural coincidence. It is always led by Cabernet Sauvignon with a tiny skosh of Cabernet Franc in the blend – usually just 1 or 2 percent. This wine is fermented in open-top wooden vats and regularly punched-down by hand. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are fermented separate from one another.
The 2022 Pott Incubo, Châteauneuf-du-Pott Vineyard is deep ruby and opaque. The bouquet is a union of both ripeness and elegance with its aromatics including lavender, violets and lilacs with additional layer of dried herbs including sage. Very much red fruited its scents include currant, cherry, red plum and a sustained minerally ferrous character. On the palate there are flavor of red cherry, currant, not fully ripe boysenberry and red plums. Juicy, fresh, and lively. There is loads of movement here. Much softer in terms of its textural profile as compared to the 2021 vintage, this wine is balanced and approachable in its youth. The tannins are already showing a rounded character at this age, 3 years post vintage. Gravelly, they linger with a light dusty presence. This might be one of the more long lasting 2022 red wines we have tried from Napa Valley. And while most of Napa Valley suffered greatly during the extended heat spike around Labor Day weekend (plants and humans included), where temperatures were above 115 degrees F in many places, this highest temperature recorded during that spell at Châteauneuf-du-Pott was only 105 degrees F.
The 2021 Pott Incubo, Châteauneuf-du-Pott Vineyard Mount Veeder. This wine is deep ruby and opaque; the slight presence of Cabernet Franc is particularly noticeable in particular in this vintage, accentuating its floral typicity including of African violets and lilacs. Red cherries, currant, red plums. Red fruited. The focus here is on the fruit with the oak a supporting influence. Smells bright. In this case, its lively bouquet translates to a lively palate. This wine tastes like Satsuma plum, red cherries, dark raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries and a layer of dark currant. This just might be one of the most memorable Pott wines we have tried to date. The tannins are your friend here in terms of aging potential; still tangled up in a tight web, their textural feel is gritty, grainy and broadly coating. Chewy. This is a wine we do not want to put down. Age worthy, not in terms of a few years, but in decades. Beautiful.
The 2019 Pott Incubo Châteauneuf-du-Pott Vineyard, Mount Veeder. This wine is dark ruby in color; the aromatics are immediately savory yet also complemented with plenty of fruit including blackberry. There is also a floral note here including of violets. This mountain grown wine is remarkably balanced in its youth; it offers intense flavors of primarily darker fruits including plum and black currant along with some lingering pepper spice. The finish is savory, featuring earthy and dense tannins which continue to persist for some time showing a medium grip. Great acidity. This wine will go many more years with the proper cellaring.
The 2017 Pott Incubo, Chateaneuf du Pott Vineyard, Mount Veeder is deep ruby and opaque; this wine is smelling in a sweet spot 8 years post vintage. Highly attractive, the bouquet offers scents of blackberry pie, boysenberry jam, dark plum, dark cherry. Very much ripe but not over ripe – and still showing its inner fruit vitality. The palate tastes like dark fig, blackberry, blueberry, dark cherries, and red plums. This wine is built to age and is still a baby. Finishes juicy, fresh, savory and loaded with texture. The tannins are grainy, gritty and outpace the fruit by far. At this age, this wine is still a youngster with loads of life ahead of it with the proper care. The grapes for this wine were harvested on October 4th and 6th, a few days before the devastating fires started on October 8th This wine was aged in four different French coopers. This wine is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Cabernet Franc.
Space and Time
The 2022 Pott Space and Time is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and and 2% Malbec. This wine is deep ruby in color; the sweetly fruited, yet also elegant bouquet sports aromas of dark raspberry, cherry, boysenberry, fig jam, with a darker an underlying spice note of tobacco and dried herbs. Brightly lit across the palate, its flavors fall on the dark and savory side of the spectrum. Brambly and spicy, this wine tastes like dark raspberry, red cherry, blueberry, boysenberry, crushed peppercorn and a lasting note of smoked sage. Finishes bright with the tannins sporting a gravelly, rounded and dusty grip which ultimately outruns the fruit on the finish. This would pair well with a T-bone steak covered in a spicy dry rub and a BBQ. This wine is superbly balanced already at 3 years post vintage.
The 2015 Pott Space and Time is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Deep ruby and completely opaque; this wine shows some bottle bouquet 10 years post vintage. Sweet fruited and very much a ripe expression of the vintage and the blend, this wine smells like ripe blackberry, boysenberry jam, baked plums and baker’s chocolate. On the palate there are flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, dark plums, dark mulberry, cocoa powder, dark chocolate and a light note of dried tobacco. This wine is still expressing loads of fruit at this age. Soft and supple, the tannins are reflective of the vintage. You can feel them but they are perfectly polished spheres seamlessly integrated into the finish. According to Aaron, this wine is probably peaking at this age for another few years. It is a bottling that defines the term, crowd pleaser. Aaron remembers 2015 as a challenging year, especially early in the season. There were two weeks of flowering with strong winds, several hundred plus degree days and 1.5 inches of rain. All that nature threw at the vineyards that time of year was detrimental to fruit set, resulting in significant shatter. Veraison was a prolonged event. Yields were tiny. The wines from this vintage produced an opulence of fruit but low amounts of tannins.
Original Gangster
The 2013 Pott Wines Original Gangster Grenache. This wine is deep ruby; it smells lively, youthful, and fresh 11 years post vintage. It takes some time for the bouquet to evolve in the glass as it is initially a bit shy. It offers scents of dried herbs, red fruits, dust, and old cedar box. The freshness on the bouquet is also clearly evident on the palate. It reveals flavors of red cherry, currant, plum and cranberry. The tannins show as lightly astringent and feature a grainy texture. They continue to persist beyond the red fruited finish. Herbal hints accompany flavors of blood orange and pomegranate. Balanced with a mouthwatering freshness and a bright fruit filled finish. If we smelled and tasted this wine blind, we would have guessed it would have been a much younger vintage. We tried this wine 11 years post vintage from a 6L large format bottle; the larger volume has certainly played a part in preserving its youthful vitality. Pair with BBQ pork chops.
Kaliholmanok
The 2007 Pott Kaliholmanok Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon also includes small amounts of Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot from the Bel Canto Vineyard located on the upper reaches of Spring Mountain at well over 2000 feet. Aaron remembers walking the ground with a well-known viticulturist. This individual drove up to the top of Spring Mountain (one winery has shirts that say something like, “I survived the drive to the top of Spring Mountain”) and ran his hands through the soil and simply said, “plant this”. If only all vineyard planting decisions were that simple. The wine takes its name from the local Wappo Tribe. “Kaliholmanok” literally means naked woods people friendly; let your imagination do the wandering in this case, helped a bit by the wine. The oak complements rather than contrasts with the fruit. Lingering accents of vanilla bean complement the smooth finish. This is dark wine with an elegant nose; it is somewhat perfume-driven showing both red and blue fruit with an intriguing hint of wet rock. The entry is soft and shows black fruit including currant and black cherry. This wine finishes smooth with the fine-grained tannins balancing harmoniously with the fruit. Finding the balance between elegance and power or richness is a line Pott walks well and this wine is certainly a prime example of this.
Cabernet Franc
The 2007 Pott Cabernet Franc is from a 1/2-acre block on rolling hills in Coombsville near Mt. George. This wine came about because of a lunch in Paris. Aaron was eating lunch with a friend while drinking an exquisite bottle of Cabernet Franc. He bet his friend that he could make a Napa Valley Cabernet Franc in the style of Loire Valley while his friend said he would fail, and the wine would be more Bordeaux in style. The short story is that Aaron failed at this attempt and had to pay up after creating the wine! The end result is a Cabernet Franc that is more Bordeaux in style. Cabernet Franc can be very aromatic and as this wine opens the bouquet reveals an deep complexity of aroma. It shows pretty floral and herbal aromas with just a touch of earthiness, rather than having a spicy component as some Cabernet Francs have in the nose. This wine is rounded and elegant on the palate with good acid balance. It is not a dense overripe Cabernet Franc; this is in part attributed to vineyard management and harvest decisions.
Pott’s extremely limited production Viognier is well worth seeking out. There is not much of this variety in all of Napa Valley, much less growing on Mt. Veeder. The only other producer on Veeder we know of growing Viognier is Progeny.
Lagier Meredith Vineyard
In 2022 an agreement was made where Pott Wines would be gifted the grapes every harvest from the Mt. Veeder Lagier Meredith Vineyard and property in return for the Pott’s taking over the farming and management of the vines. The agreement also stipulated that property owners, Steve Lagier and Carole Meredith would continue to live on site. After this transaction, Aaron & Claire purchased another property in between Châteauneuf-du-Pott and Lagier Meredith, so that all three properties are now contiguous and under the same ownership, totaling 360 acres of which only 9.5 are planted to grapevines.
Good friends of the Potts, Steve and Carole developed this vineyard and until the 2021 vintage, produced wines from the site bottled under Lagier Meredith. Carole was one of Aaron’s professors at UC Davis and Aaron later met Steve in 1988 when applying for a temporary lab technician at Robert Mondavi Winery (at the time Steve was the lab manager at Mondavi). Starting with the 2022 vintage, Aaron has assumed full control of the winemaking from the grapes from this property, bottling the wines under his Pott brand.
The total property is 84 acres of which 4-acres are planted to vine. The soils here are marine in heritage, mostly sandstone and shale. These are vines with views – the vineyard is located at 1300 feet on the slopes of Mt. Veeder in the Mayacamas mountains. From parts of the property one can see into the San Pablo Bay, part of the Bay Bridge to the south and to the furthest ridgeline to the east before reaching the central valley. Due to its elevation, fog is often below the property, but sometimes reaches their vineyards and even can blanket slopes higher on Mt. Veeder.
The property was site of an old wagon wheel road – part of what was called the “Winter Roads”. These dirt roads were used by stagecoaches in the wintertime to connect between the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. During rainy times of the year, parts of Napa and southern Sonoma would become very muddy and marsh like as a result the dirt roads leading over the rocky hills were the primary conduits between the valleys. The long driveway (now paved) leading to the vineyard and homesite was part of one of these roads.
Most of this property is wooded and covered with natural vegetation. As a result, their vineyard is somewhat isolated from other vineyards. This has its benefits including never needing to net vines from hungry birds; the size of their vineyard is in balance with the size of the surrounding woods. They don’t need owl boxes either as owls use the existing trees as their homes.
The site had never been planted to vines; the previous owner before Carole and Steve had already cleared out trees, leaving a site that could be developed into a vineyard. But Carole and Steve had to first remove all the roots and stumps and prepare the land for vines as well as implement soil erosion controls. They planted their first vines (Syrah) in 1994 and for 10 years focused on producing wine from this one variety. Later they added three additional varieties to the property including the very rare for Napa Valley Mondeuse Noire, Zinfandel and Malbec.
Select Wines
The 2022 Pott Zinfandel Lagier Meredith Vineyard, Mount Veeder Napa Valley is medium to deep ruby in color; spicy and red fruited, the bouquet sings brightly at this age, merely three years post vintage. Its scents include bramble or what we refer to as a Mt. Veeder savory character including white pepper and dried sage with additional scents of red cherries, raspberries and red plums. As the wine evolves in the glass the red fruits become more prominent. Spicy, bright and savory, on the palate there is a rounded and gentle mouth feel sporting well-integrated tannins. Balanced, its flavors include white pepper, red cherries, currants, red plums and finishing notes of dried sage and bay leaf. Lingers with a light dusty character. Persists bright with a balanced acidity. This wine is fully ripe, yet retains all the good things we love about Zinfandel.
The 2022 Pott Syrah Lagier Meredith Vineyard, Mount Veeder Napa Valley; this wine is deep ruby and opaque. The words that Carole Meredith told us many years are ringing in our head while we taste this wine, “Syrah likes a view”; these grapes certainly have a view at 1,250 feet. Immediatley compelling, the bouquet offers a darker sensibility including of dried herbs, sage, bay leaf, leather, white pepper, dark olive and potting soil. And we haven’t yet mentioned its core of fruit. These scents are of spicy plum skin and Satsuma plum. On the palate there are flavors of dark plum, boysenberry, Persian mulberry, cured meats and a lasting presence on the finish mimicking the bouquet to some extent including dried herbs, i.e., white sage, rosemary and bay leaf. The fully coating grainy and gravelly tannins linger with a dusty presence. Still, for mountain Syrah, these tannins are tamed nicely in their youth. Lingers dark and savory. Bright acidity.

Pott Party
On April 20, 2024 a party was hosted at the historic Triple S Ranch in the Mayacamas mountains of Sonoma County located about a 10 minute drive from Calistoga. This event showcased all of the brands that Aaron Pott makes wine for including current releases as well as special library bottlings. While the name of the party tied in well with 4/20, a day to celebrate ‘pot’ usage, this party was in no other way affiliated with that recreational drug.
The party was well attended by Pott wine enthusiasts and included plenty of food prepared by chefs from select local restaurants as well as restaurants from other parts of the country. The weather was perfect for this event with brands pouring their wines both outdoors and indoors. Two new brands showcased their wines for the first time ever including Howell Mountain based Remedium from the Garcia Vineyard on Howell Mountain and Covalence, whose source vineyard is in the Stags Leap District. We first introduced the founders of Covalence, Adam Ressner and Jonathan Rhyne to Aaron.
While most brands poured their current releases, Pott Wines brought a number of rare 6L format older vintage bottlings. This was a rare treat to try these wines, all of which had aged remarkably well, especially in the larger bottles.
