Work Vineyard formerly owned a 5 acre vineyard site located north of the town of Calistoga. It was first planted to Sauvignon Blanc in 1976; the original founders of Work Vineyard, Karen and Henry Work produced their first commercial vintage in 1984. In addition to producing a Sauvignon Blanc from the property, the Works also sold grapes to Duckhorn and Cakebread. Karen and Henry sold Work Vineyard in 2007 to Sam and Lamya Malhotra. The Molhotra’s owned this property until 2024 when they sold it. They continue to produce wines bottled under Work Vineyard.
Perhaps the only Napa Valley winery brand owner from Iraq (raised in Baghdad), Lamya remembers her early connection to wine was through her grandfather who produced wine in his cellar for his local church. Even today when Lamya walks into a wine cellar, she is immediately brought back to her grandfather’s cellar including the musty smells and the aromas of wine in barrels. Wine to Lamya is a feeling, the tastes and smells yes, but more than this, it is the warmth and shared connectedness to family and friends and the memories created. And in a fitting tribute to her grandfather, in 2022 she christened a small chapel located on their former Calistoga property.
Both sides of Lamya’s family are originally from northern Iraq (Kurdistan) including from the small villages of Tall Kayf (her father) and Mangesh (her grandfather and his brothers). These sides of her family moved to Baghdad in the 1960s and is the city where Lamya was born and raised. Part of her family still owns property in Mangesh although the original family home was torn down long ago.
Mangesh is located on hillsides slightly elevated above a picturesque valley and faces a mountain range on the opposite side. This village is about a 45-minute drive from Duhok, a much larger and quickly growing city. Sometimes families will have two homes in this part of the country: a summer house in cooler and higher Mangesh and a winter home in Duhok. One of the hidden but very historical attractions in Mangesh is the St. Thomas Cave, a small room inside a rock wall high on the hillsides where Thomas taught his disciples. From here there are panoramic vistas of the valley below including Mangesh.
While working in Baghdad for Sabena Airlines (a Belgium carrier that is no longer in business) and Air India she met her future husband Sam for the first time in passing in 1980. Sam would come to Iraq as part of his work at the time involving construction. They reconnected 2 years later and ultimately moved to the USA in 1985. For nearly 10 years, Lamya operated her own travel agency – Zina Travel International, named after their daughter. Sam is from New Delhi, India and at the time of our latest update to this review, is one of only three Indian American vineyard owners in Napa Valley. The other two are Dr. Madaiah Revana of Revana Vineyards and Arvind Sodhani of Sodhani Vineyards, although there are several other vintners involved with Napa Valley wineries with heritage from India. And Sam is also a published author, having written Destiny, a spirituality focused book and also Wine & Dine in Style.
Sam met Henry Work through a shared interest in wine; Work was one of his clients at Sam’s wine shop. And Sam attributes much of his early knowledge about wine and winemaking to Work.
In 2000 Lamya and Sam began producing wines under the Lamya label – buying grapes in part from Sonoma Mountain in Sonoma County and producing a variety of wines ranging from Chardonnay to Syrah and Zinfandel. After purchasing their Calistoga vineyard Lamya and Sam decided to remove the old Sauvignon Blanc vines and replant to Cabernet Sauvignon. With the help of Dr. Paul Anamosa founder of Napa based Vineyard Soil Technologies they identified the site as being suitable for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2009 they planted one acre of Cabernet Sauvignon and in 2015 planted the remaining two acres, also to Cabernet Sauvignon. The site is surrounded by neighboring vineyards and several wineries including Tamber Bey and Summers Estate. And these are vines with great views of Mt. St. Helena to the north of the property.
Winemaker Kari Auringer was Work Vineyard’s winemaker from 2012 until 2022. After working in Dallas for 15 years in graphic design Kari relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for a startup company. After this dot.com company eventually closed she took advantage of her proximity to Napa Valley and moved to the city of Napa. She took winemaking classes at Napa Valley College and at UC Davis and spent a number of years as assistant winemaker to Celia Welch (helping her craft the Scarecrow wines as well as select other premium brands). Today Kari consults for several small Napa Valley based producers. Her style of wine making focuses on balanced food friendly wines that are enjoyable young but also have the backbone to be able to age well. These are wines that have excellent acidity. In 2023 the wine making was taken over by Argentina born Julieta de la Cuadra.
Work Vineyard does not own a physical winery, rather their wines are made at a winery in Calistoga. Winemaking has since been moved from a winery near Yountville to a winery in Calistoga, a very short drive for the grapes once they have been harvested.
Select Wines
Sauvignon Blanc
The 2024 work Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc, Calistoga Napa Valley is pale to medium gold in color. The bright aromatics are saddled more on the side of tropical, but accompanied by plenty of lifted brightness and freshness. The scents include honeycomb, pineapple, pineapple guava, lychee, white peach, apple skin, lime and lemon. The refreshing palate delivers a noticeable crisp character, especially on the finish. Its flavors include green apple, white grapefruit, white nectarine, kumquat, lime, and some herbal, but not green characteristics, including lemon verbena, dried oregano and young kaffir lime leaf. The finish sings at a higher but balanced pitch; refreshing, it lingers with a mouthwatering acidity. This wine screams for something from the sea with two shells. Perhaps lightly seared scallops or linguine with clams (linguine alle vongole). It was fermented and aged in stainless steel vessels; this wine spent 8 months on the lees.
Chardonnay
The The 2022 Work Vineyard “Jacklyn’s” Chardonnay was put through full malolactic fermentation and was aged in 50% French and 50% French oak barrels. This wine is medium golden in color; the sweet nose is layered with caramelized sugars. This wine smells like honeycomb, honeysuckle, crรจme brรปlรฉe, butterscotch, yellow peaches-in syrup, layers of vanilla, apricot, glazed pineapple, and caramel candy. The palate tastes like ripe orchard fruits, including peaches, yellow nectarines and apricot, with some of the sweeter characteristics on the bouquet also echoed here, including vanilla, crรจme brรปlรฉe, butter and pineapple upside down cake which incidentally is one of our favorite birthday treats that we enjoy once a year. And this wine finishes with a very subtle note of toasted oak which is almost entirely overpowered by the intensity and ripeness of the fruit. This is definitely a ripe California Chardonnay, but not overly oak-driven or heavy in terms of its texture.
The 2017 Work Vineyard “Jacklyn’s” Chardonnay was sourced from neighboring Sonoma County. It was barrel fermented in 50% new French oak – the wine went through 100% secondary fermentation with the lees being stirred during aging. The resulting wine is golden yellow in the glass and offers a diversity of aromas including citrus, pineapple and a lemon zest. Immediately noticeable on the palate is the suppleness from entry through to the finish – a creamy or rounded mouth feel. Intensely flavored with a sweetness of fruit (no residual sugar). The finish is extended and lingers with notes of vanilla, various baking spices and a hint of popcorn butter.
Pinot Noir
The 2023 Work Vineyard, Zina’s Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is pale to medium ruby in color; the aromatics are solidly built on a core of fruit rather than spices. Its scents include cherry cola, raspberry, red licorice, red currant, cranberry, pomegranate juice, sarsaparilla and supporting layers of white pepper and old cedar box. Its flavors include dark raspberry, cherry cola, root beer, red licorice, pomegranate including the associated pith and Santa Rosa plum. One can taste the sweetness of the barrel in this wine, especially lingering on the finish with notes of toasted oak, cocoa powder, mocha and vanilla. And a light savory edge including dried sage. The tannins are spherical shapes and are seamlessly integrated into the smooth and supple finish. This is a riper expression of the variety. Pair with pulled pork or a rack of lamb and mint chimichurri sauce.
The 2021 Work Vineyard Zina’s Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Sonoma County (named in honor of Lamya and Sam’s daughter Zina) is medium to dark ruby in color; the aromatics are brooding, earthy, gamey, dark and savory. It offers a woodsy spice, scents of mushroom, dried sage, lavender and dark pepper. Initially these aromas dominate but given time its darker fruit begins to show more including black plum and bramble. We sat with the bouquet for about an hour; it never loses its savory characteristics. In a blind tasting which are always humbling experiences for us, we might have marked this wine as a Syrah on aromatics alone. It is a rich showing on the palate offering flavors of dark plum, blackberry, black currant, and cherry. Its texture rolls over the palate like velvet with supple well-integrated tannins. The finish lingers with plenty of fruit accompanied by notes of white pepper, toasted oak and dried herbs. This wine shows very nice by itself.
The 2016 Work Vineyard Zina’s Pinot Noir was sourced from the Petaluma Gap in Sonoma County. Medium ruby in color, the bouquet reveals loads of fruit aromas yet simultaneously shows an elegance in the bouquet. The bouquet is fresh and lively, even during our second time trying this bottle 8 years post vintage. It sports scents of raspberry, white pepper, suede, green olive, cardamom and dried rose petals. Aromatically, this wine is somewhat savory. Balanced across the palate, this wine is seamless in its presentation from start to finish and shows beautifully with flavors of currant, cherry, raspberry, red plum and a subtle note of clove. Anchored by lively acidity, the palate lingers with a dark spice nuance including crushed pink peppercorn while accompanied by a red fruited tartness. The tannins are fine-grained, polished and linger with lightly drying grip. Age has been kind to this wine and it still has plenty of years ahead of it still.
Adrian’s Blend
Adrian’s blend, named after Lamya and Sam’s grandchild is created with Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate vineyard as well as other non-estate red varieties. This wine is generally approachable in its youth and is a bottling that Kari calls “the crowd pleaser.” The 2016 Work Vineyard Adrian’s Blend was blended with roughly 1/3 grapes from their Calistoga Vineyard. The bouquet immediately shows aromas of plum and blackberry – there is a sweet thread of darker fruit throughout the bouquet including aromas of black licorice. Also, more subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate and Graham cracker. Mouthwatering on the palate and somewhat savory on the finish, this wine shows more dark fruit than red fruit flavors with somewhat tightly woven tannins which continue to linger.
Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2021 Work Vineyard “Lamya’s” Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep ruby hue that is nearly opaque in the glass. The aromatics offer a seamless union between intense dark fruit and sophisticated barrel influences, leading with a concentrated bouquet of blackberry, Satsuma plum, and dark mulberry. These primary fruit notes are elevated by secondary scents of dark chocolate, espresso, and fresh coffee grinds, providing a rich, roasted depth to the nose. The palate is decidedly dark, savory, and spicy, maintaining the momentum of the bouquet with flavors of plum, blackberry, and boysenberry. This fruit core is woven together with savory layers of dried sage, dried bay leaf, and cracked black pepper, all framed by the structured influence of toasted cedar. Texturally, the wine is defined by its grainy and gritty tannins, which are most prominent on the front of the palate. While their moderately drying grip runs parallel to the fruit for a significant duration on the finish, the texture eventually asserts itself, pulling away to leave a lasting, structured impression. Having tasted this five years post-vintage, the wine shows impressive stamina and a savory evolution that demands a rich protein.
The 2014 Work Vineyard Lamya’s Cabernet Sauvignon is their second vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate; the nose offers bright fruit aromatics including red cherry, plum, a hint of dry dust and slight baking spices. Savory. Balanced but richly layered on the palate, this bottling is extremely age worthy with mouthwatering acidity. It shows very good structure for this particular vintage which is often associated as being a vintage in the valley that is more approachable in its youth – as compared to the 2013 vintage. Long lasting somewhat drying tannins persist. There is also a hint of white pepper.
The 2016 Work Vineyard Lamyaโs Cabernet Sauvignon serves as the winery’s flagship expression, showcasing the pedigree of 100% varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. On the bouquet, it offers an elegant fruit profile that is slightly floral in nature, reminiscent of dried violets and rose hips, woven together with hints of old cedar box and tobacco. As the wine opens, it unveils aromas of sun-ripened blackberry and raspberry, possessing an aromatic sweetness that hints at the intensity of the vintage. Despite its concentrated core, the wine remains highly approachable, delivering seamless layers of red and dark cherry on the palate. The tannins are beautifully integrated and polished, providing a refined structure that makes the wine feel balanced from the first sip to the lingering, savory finish.
Late Harvest
And in an unusual for a Napa Valley offering, Work Vineyard produced a late harvest noble rot (created from naturally occurring botrytis spores on the grapes) wine made from the Sauvignon Blanc vines before they were pulled out. The last vintage was from 2009; dessert wine enthusiasts will want to seek out this particular wine. The 2009 Work Vineyard Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is golden color with appealing and sweet aromas of honey, honeycomb, cloves, tropical fruits and other dessert spices. Clean and balanced across the palate, this wine is guarded from being too sweet by a lower residual sugar and complemented nicely by bright acidity.
Lakeside Beverages (sold in 2023)
The Malhotra’s first wine store, John’s Food & Liquor was founded in 1992 (named after their son John) and was located in Carmichael a suburb of Sacramento. They opened Lakeside Beverages in the Granite Bay shopping center in 1997 (address: 7130 Douglas Blvd) and operated this until selling in 2023. For a year they operated both stores before selling John’s Food & Liquor in 1998. It was through their retail stores that they were originally introduced to the wines from Work Vineyard.
Remarkably, this shopping center has another Napa Valley connection. Peter Story, founder of St. Helena based St. Helena Winery operates Mount Saint Joseph Wines Tasting Room focusing on wines from Mount Saint Joseph. This is the brand he started after selling St. Helena Winery.
After the Molhotra’s sold Lakeside Beverages to the Parisi family, the business continues to offer a sizable selection of beer, wine and spirits including an excellent selection of premium Napa Valley based producers including wines from Work Vineyard. This was one of the early wine & liquor stores in northern California to offer a tasting experience within the store. While production is small each year (typically around 500 cases) some of the wines are selectively distributed internationally including in South Korea and in Australia and New Zealand. Locally, the Calistoga Inn often carries select vintages on their wine list. And the wines have rated very highly in both Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and placed well in the San Francisco Chronicle’s annual wine competition. Editor’s Note: this was our milestone 1,000th review written on this site but was not the 1,000th Napa Valley based winery or producer visited with. During this project we visited and wrote about several what turned out to be non-Napa Valley producers and in addition some of our reviews are of collective tasting rooms or spaces/wine shops that offer tasting experiences but are not producers of Napa Valley wines.
