There are quite a number of misconceptions about how easy it is to just hop in the car and head to Napa. Movies make it seem like you can pop in unannounced and have the most romantic vacation of your life, complete with stunning weather, breezy walks through the vines, and delicious wine pairings.
While these things are indeed available, we highly recommend that you do a bit of research before packing your bags to ensure your trip to Napa is divine rather than a dud. We’re here to get you started with some tips and tidbits for your first trip to Napa Valley.
Know where you’re going
How many of you reading this knew that Napa is both a town and a region? This might seem obvious to someone that grew up in California, but it’s not so blatant to anyone flying in for an outdoor getaway. Napa is a town in Napa Valley, and while quaint with fantastic shopping and nightlife, it might not be the whimsical getaway you were expecting.
We recommend choosing a hotel that takes advantage of the very best of what Napa has on offer. There is a huge variance in accommodation choices in the Napa Valley, from budget backpacker type lodging right up to no-holds-barred private luxury house rentals fit for the most discerning celebrity. Our choice would be to look for a stay with:
· Vineyard views
· Amble walking trails
· An excellent, award-winning restaurant
· An expansive wine cellar
Know when you’re going
One of the biggest appeals of traveling to Napa Valley is that the weather is typically warm and clear for much of the year. Regardless of when you decide to visit, you will undoubtedly have a fantastic time, since the combination of outstanding wine, superb food, and clear skies have a way of putting a smile on just about anyone’s face.
Keep in mind that summer is markedly busier than other months, so if you would prefer to shy away from the crowds, avoid June through September. Harvest months are generally September and October when places book up for harvest parties, so have a look at the events calendar if you fancy an interactive wine experience or stomping grapes like Lucille Ball.
Know where to make reservations
It is almost impossible to simply drive up to Napa and expect to walk into any vineyard for a wine tasting despite popular belief. There are nearly 900 commercial wineries in the valley, with over 400 of these being physical wineries. That’s a dizzying number of places, so it is best to plan your route and make reservations well in advance.
If you want to find eccentric and specialized places that might be tucked away out of view, then consider booking a private wine tour. This will give you a chance to tailor your trip to your preferred wines and learn a lot along the way. You might even open up your wine club subscription to new favorites since some vineyards, like Greer Wine, are almost exclusively dedicated to growing Cabernet Sauvignon.
Everyone can have a fabulous time in Napa, as there are so many things to do in addition to wine-tastings. Take the time to plan the basics of your trip, and consider getting some expert advice to get the most out of your first trip to Napa.
