Hello,

I live in Fremont and I looked into the heritage if the Gallegos Family which not only has roots in Napa but also in Irvington Fremont California.

Currently I am trying to save the Juan Gallegos Wine Cellar and Distillery from turning into a transportation project. I need help, SFBART is about to dig up the historic site and a large part of California wine history. Juan Gallegos came from Costa Rica and built the LARGEST winery in the state. He was able to store 1 MILLION gallons of wine and did store them in the tunnels dug into the hillside.

Juan Gallegos was a genius, he ran the entire operation by HYDROPOWER in 1883 until 1892 when he sold off some of his over 1000 acres to a family member. Juan harnessed the Alameda Creek, and he use the water to power ALL OF HIS EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING THE LIGHTING AT THE WINERY. I read that people from all over the world would come to Irvington to visit the Winery and walk the grounds. Juan Gallegos planted hundreds if not thousands of palm trees and hundreds of other species of trees, shrubs, even wheat.

Gallegos Wine cellar can be found in the history of wine and California, as he was an inventor of wine making processes that are still used today (that is what I read).

In 1906 the winery fell to the San Francisco Earthquake, and was disassembled within a year after the earthquake. What remains palm trees littered all over the "ruins" of the massive winery. The caves which Juan Gallegos store his wine while he waited for the railroad to pull up within 30 feet of the winery to take the barrels of wine to San Francisco for bottling. He was truly the automation expert in the 1880's.

At this point we are very close to losing the winery ruins forever. The plans of the special district BART is not conducive to the preservation of the Gallegos Family History nor the wine history for the entire state. Actually the California Wine Association rented the winery for a few years back in the late 1890's and early 1900's.

I have information that will make the transportation agency stop in their tracks. I live next door and I was investigating the land issues here and found out that there are land issues at the Gallegos Winery Ruins as well. I have a gofundme I started today, but I NEED HELP. I have been working on this for 8 years without 1 paycheck and I am out of money and we are out of time.

Here is the link, lets save this part of our history together!

Thank you!!!
