Martina - thank you for stopping by. Your information about the families' contributions outside of the wine industry gives me more rabbit holes to go down!

How was Richard related to brothers Adrienne Pierre Chaix and Jean Chaix?

Gap is high on my list to visit - I'm in France at least 2x a year pursuing places and spaces connected through ownership, heritage or other to Napa Valley wineries or brands. Later this year I plan to visit Gap and will add photos to this profile.

We have also highlighted some more Chaix history as it relates to their contributions to Napa Valley wine making under our profile of 13th Vineyard at Cade and a bit more under our profile of Ghost Block/Napa Wine Co.

I married into the Chaix family who lived first in Piedmont and Oakland, California. The family pronounces their last name as “shay”. The family also came from the Gap in France. Richard Chaix was a designer and engineer of water fountains such as the Levis Strauss and Justin Herman Plaza fountains in San Francisco. His company, CMS Designs, was based in Carmel and Twain Harte. His son, Denis Chaix, owns and runs Chaix Company in Oakland which sells and installs partition walls such as in Moscone Center, as well as, Staxx Walls which are glass folding walls.

Your last name fits your wine making business very well. Chaix means “grand winery”.

But I was told they pronounce it like 'checks' but maybe another part of this family pronounces it like 'shex'. I don't believe they are using the French pronunciation sounding like 'shay' as I've never heard them refer to their last name in the French pronunciation - but maybe other parts of the extended family pronounce it as 'shay'.
